IRS Refund Tracker

If you are expecting to receive a refund from the IRS, there are plenty of options for you to find out how soon to expect your money. You can track your refund online whether you are waiting for a check in the mail or if you’re expecting your refund to be directly deposited into your bank account. The IRS provides online tracking through their “Where’s my Refund?” system.

You will need to have the following information readily available:

  • Taxpayer Social Security Number
  • Filing Status shown on your tax return (i.e., Single, Married-Filing Joint, etc.)
  • Exact refund amount shown on your return in whole dollars.

If you don’t have access to a computer, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1954, or use the IRS’s smartphone application, IRS2Go, to track your refund.

When you efile your tax return, the IRS advises that you can generally expect your refund within 10-20 days. However, if you must paper-file your return, it can take significantly longer for the IRS to receive and process it, therefore longer for you to receive your refund.
